Until the 1800s the styling of chess sets ranged widely from the elaborately ornate to the crude and clumsy. In 1847 London designer John Jacques devised a style, which was both practical and elegant, featuring, clearly defined symbols and proportional sizes for each piece. Howard Staunton the leading player of the time was greatly impressed and lent his name to the new design. It immediately became hugely popular and with only minor modification remains the international standard.
