| Although a more recent development than chess or backgammon, the beginnings of dominoes are harder to define. Similar tile games were played in China from around the 12th century and dominoes first appeared there some 200 years later. It is possible that the game was brought to Europe by 18th century traders but even the derivation of the name is open to debate - it has arguable associations with Latin, Spanish and old French. The one thing certain is that tiles in all the many different games represent the 21 permutations, which result from the throw of two dice, with the addition of seven blanks in the European game.
