Backgammon has it's origins in gambling on the fall of animal bones, rolled by tribal priests to predict the future. The bones became dice and the idea of throwing them to move pieces around a board followed. Excavations in southern Mesopotamia (modern Iraq) show conclusively that a game very close to backgammon was well established 5,000 years ago. The ancient Greeks, Romans, Indians and Egyptians also played something similar; almost every Far Eastern country has at least one version; even the Aztecs played a game which had much in common with backgammon. Today, variations abound throughout Europe.
