Chess

The game of chess played in the western world first appeared in southern Europe around the 14th century. It was a development of "Shatranj" or "Shaturanga" games which originated in India around 500 AD and featured four armies, each under control of a Rajah. There are also direct links to similar games played in China, Japan, Burma, Egypt and Persia and it seems that Christian crusaders brought chess back from the Middle East some 700 years ago.
